Construction will soon start on a new two-story building for K-8 grade students at Woodmore Elementary School..
School leaders say the building will come equipped with 40-50 security cameras, scattered throughout the hallways, the parking lot, and on the playground.
In light of recent acts of violence at schools across the country, administrators at Woodmore are being proactive in stepping up safety for students.
"It heightens everyone's awareness," said Principal Joe Wank. "It makes everyone reflect and look at their safety plans to see if there are any additional needs."
Similar to the current elementary school building, visitors will have to be buzzed into the building through the administrative office.
Parents will pick up their students through a lobby area, rather than roaming the halls.
Wank says parents are supportive of the safety measures.
"The community has been very receptive to it. They understand the reasons why we're doing it, and they promote it," said Wank.
The new school building will be built in an open lot next to the current elementary school playground. It is slated to open in the fall of 2015.
