TOLEDO, OH -
A
planned student housing development in West Toledo along Bancroft Street has a
couple of business owners looking to move elsewhere.
Rick
Salem, owner of Rick's City Diner, said he's looking for a new location because
the former Omni Bar property, where many of his customers park, is part of the
targeted site.
"Quite
frankly, I don't see how I can stay with the construction that's going on and
possible loss of parking," Salem said. "I'm not happy about it, but I have to
move."
With
Salem trying to finalize plans, workers and customers are left in a holding
pattern.
"Right
now business is doing great," said Stephanie Emch, who has worked as a waitress
for Salem for the past five years. "We do wonderful here. We're all just
waiting."
"
We don't want him to leave this area because it's a really great place to meet
lots of friends and people from all across the city," said customer Linda
Liber.
Eddie
Kanon, owner of Maxwell's Brew, said he's also planning to move because
there's pending sale of the building he leases.
"As
soon as I get the word it'll be final, the city approved the planning for the
corner, I'm starting to look for a location on Monroe Street to move my
business there," Kanon said.
The
company targeting that area for a new student housing center is Polaris Real
Estate Equities, with developments at Cleveland State University, University of
Kentucky, and Indiana University. At last check, site plans have not been filed
with the city.
