By Bishop Leonard Blair with the Catholic Diocese of Toledo
I am grateful for this opportunity to share with the viewers of WTOL some words about Pope Benedict XVI, as he prepares to relinquish the papacy for reasons of age and health.
The Pope has been described as "a shy man who expressed himself with bold ideas." He possesses a combination of gentleness and strength, humility and courage, as demonstrated in his decision to step down.
From the beginning, the church has been made up of saints and sinners. It's only by God's grace and mercy that believers are able to carry out their mission to be witnesses to Jesus Christ and his gospel.
Pope Benedict XVI has devoted himself to being a faithful witness in word and deed in his interaction with people at every level. May God bless him in his retirement and raise up a worthy successor in a world that very much needs to hear a message of faith, hope, love, justice, mercy, and peace.
