CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

The Chicopee police officer grazed by a bullet during SWAT training Monday is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday.

Acting Chicopee police chief Thomas Charette says the 20-year veteran officer, who has not been identified, was shot when a weapon was unintentionally discharged. The bullet grazed the left side of the officer's face.

The officer is being treated at Baystate Medical Center, and is expected to be released Wednesday with minimal injuries.

"We train very hard, especially our special operations unit, and sometimes things just go wrong and happen. We're going to find out exactly why they did happen, and we're going to correct that problem," said Charette.

Charette says the incident is currently being investigated by both Chicopee police and Massachusetts state police. All SWAT exercises have been suspended until the investigation has been completed.
