TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Information
provided to Toledo News Now by the City of Toledo reveals that nine of the top
10 wage earners for the city in 2012 were public safety workers who logged
plenty of overtime to boost their pay above their base salaries.
The
person topping the list didn't do much work for the city last year. Peg Wallace
retired as Human Resources Director, but she earned more than $185,000, mostly
through a severance package which included unused vacation and sick time.
The
next three, Randall Pepitone, Norman Giesige, Jr. and Albert Papenfus, all with
Toledo Police, either doubled or nearly doubled their base salary through
overtime and police bonuses.
"These
command officers have extra responsibility," said Deputy Mayor Shirley Green. "They're
in command of a group of people who, under their direction, have to perform
various activities throughout the city. One of these officers runs our SWAT
unit. We have a crime suppression unit that's led by one of the officers on the
list."
At
number five on the list, fireman James Dandar also received a severance package
to take home $140,000 last year. Police Chief Derrick Diggs came in at number six,
as he cashed out some deferred overtime to raise his total pay in 2012 to more
than $138,000.
Rounding
out the top 10 were fire command officers Thomas Jaksetic, Kenneth Gehring,
Richard Syroka and David Hitt, all topping $130,000.
