Applications are now being accepted for people ages 55 and older, who are interested in living at the Collingwood Green senior housing complex by the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority.
LMHA Executive Director Linnie Willis says construction is expected to be finished in May, with residents moving into the 65-unit facility in June. She says the concept to build a senior living center came out of discussions with residents at the former Brand-Whitlock Homes, where the Collingwood Green development is starting to take shape.
"When we started meeting with the residents to talk about what the future development would be, they asked specifically for a senior building that was on the same campus as the family housing, yet set apart from family housing," said Willis.
Willis expects financing for phase two of the project to be secured later this year, with construction to build 176 residential units starting early next year on the 23-acre site.
