TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Lansing-based developer is planning to acquire the historic Berdan Building and convert the former warehouse into 115 apartment units. It's raising hopes for additional investment in Toledo's Warehouse District and across Downtown Toledo.

"That's going to be a very positive development," said John Orr, owner of the Bronze Boar tavern. "I'm eager to see something happen there."

Orr has operated his business next door to the vacant building for the past 14 years.

"115 more people living down here, at least, it's going to be great," he said.

Toledo Deputy Mayor Paul Syring heads up the city's economic development staff, and said the project would be a big boost for efforts to attract a grocery store, a pharmacy and other businesses to that area.

"Market rate residential housing, that's critical to have market rate residential and the disposable income those residents bring to the area," Syring said. "The Warehouse District is arguably the most thriving neighborhood in the city right now."

Syring also believes a renovated and occupied Berdan Building would help to make the Erie Street Market a more marketable property for the city.

"It can only assist and help someone to come into the Erie Street Market and make it viable again."
