SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Swanton Fire Department was awarded a FEMA grant for more than $80,000, which will cover a costly upgrade that was due.
"It's absolutely critical that when the firefighters are doing their job they're not worried about their gear. The gear is working with them and not against them." Said Steve Harting from Phoenix Safety Outfitters.
Representatives from phoenix safety outfitters spent the day in Swanton explaining the new gear, and taking measurements.
"The gear they're going with has a moisture management system in it and it is very comfortable, lightweight gear." Harting said.
"The new gear its safer for the firefighters a little lighter so it's less fatigue and ultimately better for the community because we can respond quicker and safer." Explained Swanton Fire Chief Chad Smith.
All of new gear should be in and ready to use by the middle of May.
