BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo's 21 new firefighters are joining the rest of the force at various fire stations throughout the week, in order to fill in the ranks reduced by continuous retirements.
The other 23 fire recruits will join the force the first week of May after completing EMT training and graduating.
The Toledo fire and rescue department will have 511 firefighters.
While more retirements are coming, the department is getting closer to the authorized strength of 525, a number that Chief Luis Santiago would like to get to.
Fire officials say residents should feel safer tonight.
"What the additional manpower allows us to do is maybe have an advantage to do some extra training or cover some special events with less of an impact to the line strength so any time we can get at our near our authorized strength that is always a good thing." Explained Lieutenant Matthew Hertzfeld.
Firefighters joining the ranks this week have been through extensive training, and are up to date on the latest technology to fight fires and respond to medical emergencies.
