BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The Ohio Attorney General made a big announcement involving Bowling Green State University (BGSU): Construction on a brand new crime lab will begin there this summer.
The architect and building group have been chosen, and a field at BGSU has been picked out as the location.
"We will be one of a handful of universities in the country with a crime lab on campus," said Dave Kielmeyer, a spokesman for BGSU.
Scientists at the current crime lab on Wooster Street said they're outgrowing the building and need more space. The new lab will be used by law enforcement agencies throughout northwest Ohio for things like fingerprint services, polygraph tests, and firearm examinations. It will also be home to special investigation units.
But the lab is also designed to be a partnership with the university, as well.
"We are looking at ways we can partner with the crime lab," Kielmeyer said. "This fall we will begin a specialization in forensics."
Kielmeyer said they will look for as many opportunities to work with the lab as they can.
The new lab is a nearly $12 million project, and is being funded through the Attorney General's capital budget.
