TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The city of Toledo has reached a new three-year contract with roughly 80 of its union workers.
On Friday, Toledo City Council accepted a mediated fact finder report agreement for a new contract for members of Teamsters Local 20, which are workers with water reclamation and landfill operations.
The contract calls for workers to get a 1 percent wage increase this year, then 2 percent increases in each of the following two years. While getting a $500 bonus, workers will pay higher health care premiums to mirror other union contracts with the city, and the 4 percent pension pick-up gets phased out over the life of the contract.
Councilman George Sarantou says the new contract will help as the city tries to manage a tight public utilities budget.
"This really helps us and I appreciate what all the bargaining units and today with the Teamsters have done, and that is agree to the elimination of the pension pick-up," said Sarantou.
Mayor Mike Bell says the anticipated water rate increase proposal is still a few weeks away from being presented to Council. Currently, the proposal would call for water bills to increase between $15 to $20 per year for the average residential customer.
