TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
It's
been in the planning stages for years to divert traffic underneath the Norfolk
Southern lines along McCord Road, and the Lucas County Engineer's office wants
to make sure property acquisition doesn't hold up the project.
Engineer
Keith Earley says negotiations are on-going with five property owners and
purchase agreements may soon be finalized, but the Lucas County Commissioners
have given the prosecutor's office the go-ahead to file court proceedings if
necessary to acquire the necessary property for the McCord Road underpass
project.
"Those
that we have not reached an agreement with, the time frame is running out,"
Earley said. "We need to file appropriations to start the time clock so that we
can occupy those properties within a year. They've been appraised, ODOT's
reviewed it, so they've been appraised and scrutinized."
Earley
also said the target is starting construction work in the Spring of 2014. The
goal is to save people time and gas by eliminating idle time at the crossing
and making it safer for pedestrians to get from one side of the tracks to the
other.
