AMHERST, OH (WOIO) -

Charges have been filed after a dog was stabbed to death early Sunday morning in Amherst.

Gerald D. Miller, 43, was charged with cruelty to companion animals. He was released on a $1,000 bond.

Jean Danicki says she and her husband heard their dog, Maya, barking in the front yard.

Her husband looked out the window and saw Maya on the sidewalk in front of their house, sniffing a smaller dog on a walk with its owner, identified as Miller. According to the husband, as soon as Maya started to bark, Miller stabbed Maya in the back.

Miller claims Maya tried to attack the dog he was walking, and that's when he stabbed Maya in the upper back with a folding knife he was carrying.

Maya, a five-year-old Shephard-Chow mix, died en route to the emergency vet.

Miller is due back in court next week.
