TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The
newest members of the Toledo Police Department are in their second week on the
job, learning the ropes from seasoned vets.
Officer
Shade Keeney is one of 40 new officers on the force. Every day for a month,
Keeney will have a "hands one the wheel, feet on the streets" approach to
training with Officer Robert Summers, a 21-year vet.
"There's
a lot of things you just can't know unless you do the job," Summers said. "It's
my responsibility to take care of him and make sure he stays safe and learns
how to do the job properly."
From
the moment they start their shift at 6:30 a.m., they are a team. Whether it's
an emergency, a domestic violence call, or proactive patrol, the officers may
see any number of situations over the course of a shift.
"Once
you cleared one call, you went to another one, and it makes the day go by
really fast," Keeney said. "I love every minute of it…When they say, ‘If you
love your job, you'll never really work a day of your life,' I understand now
what that means."
