Findlay organizations may take over ice rink, baseball fields

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Findlay city council members voted Tuesday to allow other organizations to take care of the city's ice rink and baseball fields.

The idea was originally introduced to the city by the Findlay Youth Baseball organization. It will allow for bids to go out to different entities to take care of landscaping and maintenance needs of the properties.

Abbi Michael takes her children to the ice rink for lessons each week. She said she likes the way things are currently operated and maintained, and doesn't want to see that change.

""I've never had any complaints," she said. "My concern would be that the ice fees would go up if the county wasn't running the rink anymore."

But Safety Service Director Paul Schmelzer said that won't happen.

"It does not have anything to do with scheduling of the fields, who gets to use them and when," explained Schmelzer. "It's basically a mowing and field maintenance contract."

He said the city wants to compare bids to what they are already spending. Organizations that contract to maintain the properties may be able to put volunteer effort into it, and the city would see the same results for less money.
