Don't Waste Your Money: Beware of zombie subscriptions

(Toledo News Now) -

Annual subscriptions - for a gym, cell phone, or magazine - are great because you usually get the best deal. Unfortunately, when you try to end that contract, it's often not so great.

These days, it seems zombies are everywhere. For the most part, they're fun, just a little scary, but a new report says the ones you really need to watch for these days, are zombie subscriptions.

The AMC series The Walking Dead, and a number of imitators, have turned zombies into a part of our daily lives, but the zombie apocalypse is not just on your TV anymore. It can hit your bank account and credit card if you're not careful.

Yahoo Finance says any time you cancel a magazine subscription, gym membership, other recurring charge, check your credit card statement for months afterward. The report says 1 in 4 people are hit with zombie renewals. Just when you thought that gym membership was done, it rises from the grave to hit your credit card again.

Doesn't That Stink

From the doesn't that stink file, comes the worst zombie renewals: magazine subscriptions that won't end.

Long after you stop a magazine, many will keep hounding you with bills. Some will start up again a year later, as if you had never canceled.

That's why it's best to pay for magazines with a check, instead of giving those zombies a credit or debit card.

Bottom Line

Watch your credit card bill carefully for unexpected charges, especially in the months after you cancel a magazine or service. That way you catch those zombies and you don't waste your money.
