TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools has been accepting applications for an interim superintendent, but the deadline was Friday.

The district's website says applications must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on March 22.

TPS began its search March 1, after  Dr. Jerome Pecko announced he would resign after his contract expired in July.

The application process was open to people outside of the district, but board president Brenda Hill expressed the desire to hire someone from within the district.

"It's good that people want to, I'm glad," Hill said. "We'll have a choice of people, but I'm glad that people feel they have the skills and they have the desire to help us as a school system."

The school board received five applications, and only one was internal. That was Dr. Romules Durant, who is currently an assistant superintendent with TPS and has been with the district since 1999. He is also a 1994 graduate of Waite High School.

The other candidates are all external. Dr. Mike Zalar is currently the Oregon superintendent. He has been with Oregon Schools since 2003, and has been superintendent since 2008.

Catherine Smith is from Toledo, but is not currently associate with TPS. She has almost 30 years of teaching experience, and spent 17 years as a teacher in Toledo schools from 1983 to 2000. She spent her last eight years as an educator in Florida, but resigned last year.

Dr. Deborah Piotrwoski was a finalist for the Rossford superintendent position, and has been the superintendent for Xenia Community Schools since 2010. Piotrowski is from Toledo, though, a 1971 graduate of Rogers High School. She has eight years of superintendent experience altogether.

The final candidate, Douglas Heuer, is the current superintendent for Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools. He has almost 30 years of administrative experience and has been superintendent of his current district since 2009.

"I want a person who is dynamic, a person who has ideas, a person who is a good manager," said Hill. "And if it is a person from within? Fine. If it's a person that's not within? Fine. I just want a good person. That's what we're looking for, the quality person."

Hill said the school board will hold a special meeting on March 27, during which they will discuss who of the five candidates they will interview.
