The Toledo Public Schools
board is standing behind a proposal to adopt the ALICE training for the
district's security procedures.
School Board President
Brenda Hill said the board is open to adopting the program, and that safety is their
number one priority.

Since the recent incident
involving a loaded handgun being brought into Raymer Elementary in a student's
coat pocket, the re-evaluation of security procedures within the district has
"I think parents want to
know that the district is currently looking at our procedures," said Brian
Murphy, TPS assistant superintendent. "We're reviewing crisis plans right now
across the district, in addition to looking at the ALICE program."
Murphy said they are
reviewing the program and will most likely adopt ALICE across the district, but
it still has to be discussed with board members and administration before it
can be voted on.
In the meantime, the
district will continue to keep students and staff safe through communication and
education on current procedures.
"We need to communicate
with our kids as best as we can," Murphy said. "Typically in situations like
this, there's signs that are given to our teachers and given to our administrators,
and we need to make sure that when things like that are reported to us, we look
into situations and we take proactive measures to ensure that weapons don't
make it into our schools."
