The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) says it is investigating a sexual assault at Advanced Specialty Hospital of Toledo on Garden Lake Parkway.
Tessie Pollack, a spokeswoman for the state health department, says her agency was contacted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Chicago. ODH investigates complaints at hospitals on behalf of the federal agency.
Toledo Police detectives are also looking into the sexual assault that happened in mid-March, according to Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.
Heffernan says the patient involved has been removed from the hospital, but he could not offer more information because the investigation is new.
"The safety of our patients is our top concern," said Advanced Specialty CEO Sal Iweimrin in a statement. "As soon as we found out about the allegation, we contacted the police immediately. We have been cooperating with police since the investigation started. The Ohio Department of Health is also investigating. We will take all necessary action once the police investigation has concluded."
The identities of the patient and alleged attacker have not been released.
We will bring you more details as they become available.
