Oregon City Schools add 17 bus routes

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Clay High School plans to add 17 new bus routes for next year, making a total of 38 for the City of Oregon. It's part of an expansion that will provide more students with a ride to school.

In 2011, Clay High School didn't offer any bus services due to budget cuts. Last year, 12 stops were added, and this year, another eight.

"We want to make sure we're providing better services for our students and our families," said Superintendent Michael Zalar.

The expansion is expected to cost the district $80-100,000, but it should be worth it.

"We have a number of students that live in the rural part of our district, and during their ninth and tenth-grade year they might not have access to their own transportation," Zalar said. "So providing school transportation to those students is critically important."

Zalar says not only will the new bus routes help the high school, but they will help organize the elementary schools, too.

"All of our elementary schools will be on the same start times," he said. "We have a lot of different times and that makes it difficult for parents."

The new bus routes will add three new drivers.
