MADISON TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Madison Township leaders say the township's backup wells could be contaminated.

The wells aren't currently being used, but officials say they want to make sure they're safe.

Township Supervisor Larry Richardson says the problem stems from an incident about 10 years ago, when contaminated water was found near a Brazeway plant. Richardson said Brazeway has been cooperative, and has agreed to replace the backup wells if they're found to be unsafe.

Now environmental consultants are being brought in to inspect the wells.

There are several homes in the area, where residents say they have had water concerns in the past, and are happy the township is checking on the wells.

"We've been drinking bottled water for a long time now, so they do their testing around here," said Felipe Villarreal, who lives near the backup wells. "They're following protocol, so they need to do that."

Other residents say they have also switched to bottled water, as a precaution, but Richardson says the wells currently being used for the township are completely safe and contaminant-free.
