Earlier this year, an Indianapolis developer made plans to convert the former home of the School for Creative and Performing Arts into an apartment complex. But now, the community of Pendleton will see the development of a hotel.
James Bates has grown up in Over-the-Rhine his whole life and says it's dramatically different now than it used to be.
"Not too long ago this was a bad area. There was a lot of crime," says resident James Bates.
"I've been just astounded at the rate of renovations and revitalization," says resident Ethan Fletcher.
Thanks to some recent development including the new Horseshoe Casino located a few blocks away, residents say they're not shocked to hear about a luxury hotel coming to the area.
"You see less litter, less violence, less crime," said Branden Criss.
"We're really excited to continue gentrifying the neighborhood," added Fletcher.
Core Redevelopment out of Indianapolis still owns the property, but the Cincinnati based Remark Hospitality Development Company is taking over the project.
A representative from Remark Hospitality says in addition to a boutique hotel with over 100 rooms, they hope to still build residential apartments. In addition, the historic building could be home to a day spa, fitness center, and fine dining.
"I really like the idea of the mixed space, residential and commercial," said Fletcher.
"A lot of young professionals, entrepreneurs are starting to move in, and it's bringing a new image to Cincinnati. It's bringing hope to Cincinnati," said Criss.
Developers also have plans to preserve the three acres of green space that sits next to the former school.
"I think we need as much green space in the neighborhood as possible, so I'm real happy they're going to keep that," said Fletcher.
A representative from the development company says their next step is to select the brand affiliation for the hotel. They didn't disclose what their options are at this point.
Developers say they hope to begin construction on this project in mid to late summer.
