TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools began interviewing candidates for an interim superintendent Tuesday.

TPS board members will have 45-minute interviews with each of their three potential candidates. The first was internal candidate Dr. Romules Durant, who was interviewed Tuesday evening.

Durant's interview unexpectedly lasted two hours.

Durant is currently an assistant superintendent with the district. He graduated from Waite High School in 1994, then graduated from University of Toledo in 1998, and he has worked with TPS ever since. He has been assistant superintendent since August of 2008.

"Just very humbling to understand the gravity of the position and how many people you impact, and not really being conscience of those things," Durant said after his interview. "Just wanted to thank all those as well as the board for this opportunity and be more than excited just through the process as it continues on."

The other two candidates – Dr. Mike Zalar and Douglas Heuer – will be interviewed Thursday.

"When we have talked to all three of them, we will decide what we want to do," said Board President Brenda Hill. "We might decide that we want to choose one of them as a superintendent, we might decide to call someone back to interview them again and we might decide we want to do a larger search."

If the board selects one of these three candidates for the position, they will take over as interim superintendent once Dr. Jerome Pecko's contract is up on July 31.

Hill didn't say what kinds of questions the board is asking the candidates, but said they are asking questions that will make sure their decision is the right one.

"As right as possible. An interim superintendent could turn into a full time superintendent, or it could just be a interim superintendent who holds us until we decide to choose a full time, maybe do a full search," she said. "We have to see how it works out, but we are going to get the best candidate we can."
