A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
The 18th Annual Dance Marathon is being held this weekend at Bowling Green State University.
All the money raised will benefit the Children's Miracle Network at Toledo's Mercy Children's Hospital.
The marathon is part of a year-long student run philanthropy program.
Over the years, $2.8 million has been raised for the hospital.
"It's a great way to bring our campus community together. We give back to the community because all the money that we raise stays local and supports families who are in our community," said dancer Mick Ealey.
A gym floor has been transformed into a dance floor.
Everybody is here for one reason.
"For the kids," said dancer Marie Tucker.
One of those kids is Samantha Beemer.
When she was fifteen, Samantha was in a horrific car accident.
"I actually spent my 16th birthday in a coma at Mercy. Right now, driving is not an option. Hopefully, sometime in the future," said Samantha.
Samantha's mom Libby is grateful for the care and therapy her daughter received at Mercy, made possible, in part, because of the dance marathon.
"And if it weren't for the efforts of these students, there would be a lot of things at the hospital missing that the kids desperately need," said the elder Ms. Beemer.
The 32 hour dance marathon wraps up Sunday afternoon.
Everyone here has one goal in mind and that's to make miracles happen.
