Blue Wednesday for Child Abuse Prevention Month

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

If you noticed things seemed a bit blue Wednesday that was a good thing!

Many people wore blue to raise awareness about child abuse prevention, and several trees and poles in downtown Toledo also sported the color when they were yarn-bombed.

"Child abuse is a serious subject, but to know we have the support of the art community, the yarn-bombing community, it's just a big moral support for our staff, to know somebody out there really cares about what we do," explained Julie Malkin, of the Lucas County Children Services.

Last year, there were more than 800 confirmed cases of child abuse in Lucas County. Nearly half of those were children age 5 or younger.

"Even if people wear blue this one day, that means they're thinking about preventing child abuse," Malkin said. "Maybe next time if they come into a situation where they have a position to act, they will act, they won't be afraid to intervene and protect a child."

To report cases of child abuse or neglect in Lucas County, call 419-213-CARE. The line is open 24/7.
