Fire task force moves slowly but surely

Posted: Updated:
FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's been less than a year since the Findlay Downtown Fire Task Force was created to prevent downtown structure fires, but checking buildings for violations is taking longer than they originally planned.

There is only one inspector, who is occasionally assisted by two other firemen. They say it's difficult for their small crew to walk through every downtown building.

"I'm not out to cost anybody a lot of money, I'm looking for simple things that can save a life," explained Eric Habegger, the fire inspector. "Smoke detectors, emergency lights."

Habegger says they have inspected 90 downtown buildings since last September. He says he is doing the best he can, but it's not likely any additional firefighters will be joining the task force. More than a dozen of their jobs are on the line after a failed tax renewal.

"It's a fact of life. Nobody likes taxes," Habegger said. "We work with what we've got and do the best we can."

Habegger says he likes to think his inspections help save lives.
