Classes resume at the Islamic Center after fire

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For the first time since September, classes are in session at the Islamic School of Greater Toledo.

After the fire at the Islamic Center, classes at the school were relocated to Owens Community College. And although they say they are thankful for everything Owens did for them, students and faculty are happy to be home.

"It's a very nice feeling," said Kindergarten teacher Manal El Shiekh. "And very soothing, when you come to the place that you have been for a long time."

After Randy Linn allegedly set the center on fire last year, water and smoke damage left the Islamic Center empty for months.

El Shiekh says it was hard for the students to adjust.

"It was difficult for them at Owens Community College, because it's a new place for them," she said. "And it's bigger than here, but we try to adjust to the situation."

But everyone is happy to be back this week, she says.

"It's just coming back home. Everybody was so excited. We're happy, they are trying to go everywhere, see if something saved from their materials or what's gone, so yesterday and today they were kind of wandering everywhere."

Randy Linn is set to be sentenced next week.
