LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp says he has one of the best SWAT teams in the country, and he let them know that Tuesday.

The Lucas County Sheriff's SWAT team spent nine hours at the scene of a standoff with 51-year-old Jeffery Derden on January 25. Derden was armed and threatening to kill himself, and it was freezing cold. Sheriff Tharp says his team never complained, even when some had to lay in the snow for hours.

When SWAT members went into the house that day, Derden shot himself in the chest – but survived.

"It was a sad day for him," Tharp said. "But the officers maintained, and they did very, very well, and were professional, and they wanted that person to live. They did not want him to die, and we held out, and it all worked out well."

Tuesday afternoon the sheriff gave unit citations to the 19 SWAT members for their efforts. They were given ribbons to wear on their uniforms.

Sheriff Tharp said Derden is still hospitalized, but will be charged with disorderly conduct when he is released. He also said his team would never ask for special recognition, but he wanted to make sure they got it.
