TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Thomas Beatie, known as the pregnant man, was the keynote
speaker at the University of Toledo's Diversity Week.
He is a transgender person, and when his wife could not
get pregnant, they decided he would.
Beatie's message to students was that being different is normal. He spoke to
them about his experience.
"You just have to live your life and be yourself, you can't
worry about how other people's opinions are going to affect your life," he
said. "Because you are the one that lives your life."
Diversity Week is put on by several campus organizations.
One of the main events is the Diversity Ball. It started as a prom for lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender high school students who were not allowed to take
their partners to their own school dances, but it now celebrates all types of

"I remember hearing about Thomas being on Oprah back in
high school," said Kelsey Friemoth, president of Spectrum. "Now that I'm part
of the community, more so than I was in high school, I'm actually understanding
that this is a huge struggle for him to even come talk to us about."
