AKRON, OH (WOIO) -
Akron Police are asking people to avoid the area around W. North, Aqueduct, Valley and Gold Streets.
Several intersections have been barricaded due to a massive water main break.
Lt. Edwards tells 19 Action News that the first call came in around 6:16 p.m. Thursday for traffic backup. Once police arrived, they realized it was more than just a traffic problem.
The Water Department was called and the intersection of Aqueduct and North Street was closed off.
Police assisted several families, who were trapped on their porches and two people had to be plucked from their cars.
Two houses on Gold Street have extensive water and structural damage to the basement.
According to the Red Cross, most residents in the neighborhood found places to stay for the night --with family or friends. About 10 people from three different families need shelter. The Red Cross is working on finding them a place.
The water stopped flowing about 9:15 p.m. Police, fire and utility crews were still on the scene as of 10:30 pm.
Police are asking drivers to refrain from using the areas of North, Aqueduct, Valley and Gold. Those intersections are blocked off and will be so through sometime Friday.
