The third annual Kielbasa Cook-off, sponsored by The Polish-American Community of Toledo (PACT), raised nearly $10,000.
The popular event was held on Saturday, April 14, at Blessed Sacrament Community Hall in West Toledo.
Thirteen amateur cooks served up their favorite homemade kielbasa recipes for judges and the local community.
Polish Village Kielbasa, led by Shawn Zaborski, took the first place prize, along with $300 and a trophy. The group also won the Celebrity Judging Contest.
Celebrity judges included Toledo City Council members Tom Waniewski and Michael Collins. Also judging was Toronto author, Ed Zawadzki, who was on-hand for a book signing "Poles of the New World".
Second place went to Domanski's Klassic Kielbasa, led by Mark Domanski. The group moved up a notch, after finishing third in the last Kielbasa Cook-off
Pryba Polska, led by Jeremy Pryba, took home the third place prize.
Stan Machosky of PACT said the event was a success, with an estimated 1,000 people in attendance.
Machosky said there is no secret to cooking the "perfect" kielbasa.
"You need a good taste, your own personal taste. It varies all over the place. What's good for you might be different for me," said Machosky.
Money raised from the cook-off will be used by PACT for a scholarship fund for Polish children and help establish a Polish community center.
