Toledo garbage collection to resume Wednesday, recycling still suspended

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

According to a statement from Republic Services, trash collection will resume for city of Toledo residents on Wednesday. Trash will be collected on a one day delay for the rest of the week, meaning residents who normally have trash collected on Tuesday will see their trash picked up on Wednesday, and so on throughout the week.

Recycling services will not resume until Republic is back to full staff, the statement said.

According to Republic GM Dave Vossmer the company plans to use replacement workers should members of Teamsters Local 20 not report for work.  If Local 20 workers come to work they will handle the trash collection, if not the replacements will go into action.

Trash collection had been delayed due to a work stoppage initiated by unionized workers. The stoppage is centered in Youngstown, where workers with Teamsters Local 377 have been without a contract since October. The union is trying to put pressure on the company by expanding the work stoppage and picket line to Toledo.

Representatives of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters' say their actions are also meant to put pressure on Republic not to leave the Central States Pension Fund.

"Until we started bargaining several months ago to exit the Central States Pension Fund, we almost never had a dispute with the Teamsters, much less the ongoing picketing and work stoppage activity. This has all started in recent weeks to put additional pressure on us now that we have exited from Central States in five locations," said Holly Georgell, senior director of Labor Relations for Republic Services, in a statement. "We have repeatedly asked the Teamsters to explain the basis for their strike and picketing activity and the response is vague, unsupported statements about alleged unfair labor practices."

Republic Services has filed unfair labor practice charges against Local 377 in Youngstown for what it is calling "an unlawful scheme to evade good-faith contract negotiations."

Officials say they will consider the same in Toledo.

Just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Republic announced that trash collection would go forward Wednesday.

"Trash pick-up for City of Toledo residents will resume tomorrow (April 17). We will be running one day behind our normally scheduled collections. For example: If Wednesday is your normal trash day, it will be collected Thursday of this week," said Paul Rasmusson, Republic Services Division sales manager. "Our priority will continue to be trash pick-up. Recycling services will resume when Republic has sufficient staff on board."
