It will only take one more
vote for the faculty at BGSU and administration to finally have a contract.
The faculty association
has approved what will be their first contract, and now the board of trustees
just needs to do the same.
"The first faculty member
to sign a card in favor of unionization signed that card on March the 4th,
2009," said David Jackson, of the BGSU Faculty Association. "So [it's been] over
four years, in terms of becoming a unionized faculty and negotiating our first
Throughout the academic
year, the faculty association held grade-ins and demonstrations, making it
clear that coming up with a fair contract is not negotiable. Both sides feel
they have reached that goal with this contract.
"The professors will have
more time to spend with their students, will feel more committed to the
institution…if they're not consistently worrying about either losing their job,
or even finding a job offer that just pays more," Jackson said. "We think it's
a very fair contract, for the faculty, for the administration, and just as
importantly for the students."
On the table is a 3-year
contract with a yearly, 3 percent increase to the faculty's base salary.
Faculty did take a cut to their summer salary, and have seen an increase in
their contribution to the healthcare premium.
