BG officials dispute Verizon tower construction

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Bowling Green has finally met with Verizon representatives to talk about a different location for a controversial cell phone tower.

Two weeks ago, Verizon Wireless started construction on land at the I-75 northbound on-ramp, off Wooster Street. This came as a shock to city leaders and BGSU administration, since both were adamant they did not want a 500-foot cell phone tower at the entrance to the city.

Representatives from all three groups met and discussed alternate locations.

Mayor Dick Edwards said Verizon made it clear that the current location was not their first choice, and they would prefer to build the tower on the university campus to serve their main customers in Bowling Green – BGSU students and faculty.

"We have high hopes that there will be another location identified on campus that will be mutually agreeable," Edwards said.

Work has not ceased at the current site, but the mayor said the meeting was productive and he is confident that communication will continue and a different site will be settled on.
