Toledo residents have mixed reaction on increased water rates

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Thursday, Toledo City Council is taking a closer look at the proposal to raise water rates to pay for improvements at the water treatment plant.

Currently, the average residential customer in Toledo pays about $174 per year for water service. If approved by City Council, that bill would increase to nearly $300 per year by 2018.

That dramatic increase is giving Jeff Alexander a case of sticker shock.

"I think it's entirely way too expensive. [I] may be even consider moving out of Toledo if rates are getting more expensive," said Alexander.

Information provided by the mayor's office shows the city would collect roughly $353 million between 2014-2018 with the rate increase, with $314 million earmarked for improvements to the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant and delivery system.

Upon hearing the reasons behind the rate increase, Alexander's opinion changed.

"Yes, I guess I suppose I'm in support of that," he admitted.

Tonya Overton says she does not mind paying more if the goal is securing Toledo's water supply.

"If it's going to deliver clean water, I'd prefer to pay extra because I would not be happy if I got polluted water through my faucet. So if that means we have to pay a little more, we have to pay a little more," said Overton.

Linda Boyle is skeptical about the proposal.

"As long as it all goes towards what they say it's going for. Nobody wants to pay higher bills," said Boyle.

The mayor's office is asking City Council to vote on the rate increase at its next meeting April 30.
