LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A donkey basketball game
fundraiser at Lake Local Schools has caused major concern and controversy.
Superintendent Jim Witt
has received thousands of emails protesting the event. People are concerned
that the fundraiser sends the wrong message to the students and the community.
The fundraiser has been
held for several years. Money raised goes toward funding the school's prom. The
game involves participants getting on the back of donkeys and playing
basketball. Protestors say this is a form of bullying.
One message Witt received
"Please don't use donkeys
for entertainment. Maybe another tornado should come through and rip your
building apart again. Then you won't be harming any animals."
Witt said he didn't expect
such a negative response toward the event because the school has been doing it
"We don't believe that we're
doing anything that puts animals at risk or in harm's way," he said. "Most of
us are pet owners around here, we don't think it's sending the wrong message to
Will also said they are
going to make an assessment after this year's games to see if they should
continue the fundraiser.
