Railroad project concerns Sylvania officials

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania leaders are expressing concern over a proposed railroad project that could have trains moving through town much more frequently.

Currently, Sylvania residents only deal with train traffic occasionally, but that could change.

"If those trains [tracks] are connected, there's going to be trains coming through at any and all times, as far as we know," said Kevin Aller, director of the Department of Public Service.

Years ago, about five miles of tracks in Riga and Ottawa Lake in Michigan were torn up. Now, a proposed development project could but the tracks back.

"We don't know, and I don't know that they know, what the increase in traffic will be, but obviously if that is connected, and their intent is to use it to transport more materials through town, that's going to mean more trains through town," Aller said.

Other concerns for the city is the safety of crossings, and those being blocked for periods of time. Another worry is train derailments.

"It just brings some concerns, and we want to make sure that it's just not a matter of connecting the tracks and it's done," Aller said. "We want to make sure that the concerns that we have are known and can be addressed, so that if they are connected, that everybody's working together to try and minimize those."

Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough wrote to the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Government expressing those concerns. Their hope is that their concerns are addressed if the project moves forward.
