school board members are fighting back against the state budget, in an attempt
to save their jobs.
is one of the school districts under investigation for scrubbing – allegedly dropping
truant students from attendance records, and then later re-enrolling them.
a result, a supplement was added to Governor John Kasich's budget bill, House
board members say it would allow the governor to select up to three
replacements on the school board where a district may have been involved in
scrubbing. The mayor would get to replace two.
bill has passed in the House, and goes to the Senate next.
night, the Toledo school board unanimously passed a resolution that opposes the
plan. They say it's not fair, and that the Ohio legislature should instead
follow the processes that already exist in state law.
member Lisa Sobecki says it would take rights away from the voters who elected
an unbalanced, ridiculous piece of legislation," she said. "I just wish our
legislators would spend more time looking at productive legislation instead of
these types of things that happen in bills when they come along."
scrubbing investigation is still in progress, and Sobecki says lawmakers
shouldn't do anything until all the facts are in.
