(Toledo News Now) -

Wednesday night a kick-off event was held at Imagination Station for sponsors and charities involved in the Marathon Classic golf tournament.

More people know it as the Jamie Farr Classic, but this year, it's the Marathon Classic, presented by Owens Corning and Owens Illinois.

For the last 28 years, the best women golfers around the world have come to play the Classic, and today it was announced that so far, eight of the top 10 players on the current LPGA Money List are committed to compete at the Marathon Classic.

That includes Toledo native Stacey Lewis.

The Classic not only generates millions of dollars in revenue each year for the local economy, but net proceeds are donated to northwest Ohio children's charities. Over $7 million have been donated since the tournament's inception in 1984.

This year should be no different.

"No one will ever replace Jamie Farr, we'll always be grateful for everything he did for the tournament," said Tournament Director Judd Silverman. "We needed to find a new title sponsor for this event, and we are grateful that Marathon Petroleum has stepped up…so the future looks very bright for this tournament, and we couldn't be happier and more excited about the future."

The tournament this year is July 15-21. All four rounds played at Highland Meadows will be televised live on the Golf Channel.
