Community clean-up event in Point Place and Shoreland

POINT PLACE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

People in Point Place and Shoreland are getting ready to take the beautification of their neighborhoods into their own hands.

Over the past few weeks, graffiti, trash, and other acts of vandalism have been creeping into the area, and residents say they're fed up.

"As a community, we are one," said resident Felecia Ballenger. "We are going to clean the parks, we are going to clean our community, and keep the graffiti away."

It started as an idea on Facebook, but it has grown into a community event. Next week, residents will be rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty to clean up their neighborhoods.

"Finding any area that's really trashy and needs to be cleaned the most, and going from there and expanding," Ballenger said. "We'll clean all the parks, and we'll do all the main streets, and we'll start to work into the side streets."

Organizers are hoping that the event won't only be about cleaning, but also about teaching.

"This became the jump start of actually making it more a community program, and involving our kids," Ballenger said. "Showing our kids to take pride in their community, and take care of it."

With a week to go, organizers say they are still looking for more donations of food and resources to help volunteers.
