Toledo Public Schools
officially has an interim superintendent on board, ready to take over for Dr.
Romules Durant has a
one-year contract to serve as interim superintendent, and says he's ready to
start August 1. The contract outlines several expectations the board has for Durant,
including raising graduation rates.
"I'm always up to all
challenges," Durant said. "I think it's one of sitting down with the team,
taking a look at the goals…and strategically aligning plans that are impacting
Durant says success is all
about planning and surrounding yourself with people who want to move in the
same direction as you.
The district has agreed to
pay Durant a $140,000 salary. In return, they would like to see an improvement
in the district's communication with the public, a boost in academic
performance, and higher graduation rates. The latter, Durant says, can be
accomplished by getting everyone on the same page.
"Generating a plan
strategically that the staff is aware of, as well as the community," he said. "But
most importantly, the students. Because when the students own the plan, own the
mission and own the vision, then you truly have them. Then they have internalized
the expectation of being a college/career-ready graduate."
