Epilepsy Foundation of New England holds inaugural walk

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Hundreds turned out at Forest Park on Sunday morning to raise awareness about epilepsy.

The park was the site of the Epilepsy Foundation of New England's inaugural walk in Western Massachusetts.

The group, which serves Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New Hampshire, has spent the past 30 years providing services for people with the disorder and their families.

Those families said an event like Sunday's helps shed light on their loved ones' condition.

"It is wonderful," said Kevin Crowell, who has epilepsy. "We want to support this, we want to get the word out that we want to do something about it. We want to get the word out about epilepsy, epilepsy research and making it better."

"There is a group of 21 plus with us today," said Sheila Diaz, whose daughter has epilepsy.  "They put us together. We have the foundation. I go on [their website] and get on the blogs. It is just good to know information and to be a part of something big."

Sunday's inaugural walk raised $10,000.

CBS 3 Springfield was proud to be a sponsor of the event.
