Five minors are facing criminal charges after a riot involving around 15 more broke out at the Westfield Franklin Park Mall Saturday night.
The minors, ranging from ages 12 to 16, were charged with misdemeanor riot charges for allegedly jumping two other girls at the mall.
Police say a large group of about 20 kids were being rowdy in the mall, so officers asked them to leave. Two victims called their parents to pick them up because they were being threatened by the group inside. Once they got into the parking lot, the five attacked them, kicking and punching.
"They were fighting. They were assaulting someone. That meets the criteria specifications for a riot charge, a misdemeanor riot charge. Two of them were also charged with resisting arrest because they fought and struggled with the officer when he tried to intervene and help the victims," explained Lt. Mark King with the Toledo Police Department.
This incident raises questions about if there will be more security at the mall. Police say that decision is up to mall management itself, but they will increase patrols on the exterior.
