TPD improves response times

The Toledo Police Department has released its annual report that details the department's new strategies and accomplishments. Numbers show the department's response time is getting faster.

The TPD gets called more than 300,000 times a year. Officials at the department say with the efforts from additional officers, paired with experienced dispatchers knowing how to prioritize calls, they are able to help faster.

Overall, police have seen an 8.25 percent improvement. The greatest improvement came from low-priority calls. Significant jumps also came in response for high-priority calls, which is when they respond with sirens blazing and high speeds.

In 2011, police were able to get to the high-priority calls within about 6 1/2 minutes. In 2012, they dropped 30 seconds off that time.     

"A lot of those are probably under 3 minutes I'd be willing to bet, if you looked at every single one. Which is really hard to do when we take 340,000 calls a year. That would be difficult to really quantify that. But 30 seconds could mean the difference between life and death," said Lt. Mark King with the TPD.

King says these numbers are huge for metropolitan departments, especially at a time when some departments have stopped responding to certain types of calls due to a lack of manpower.
