TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo City Council has approved a water rate increase plan to pay for upgrades at the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant.

The plan passed with a 11-1 vote from Council members. Tyrone Riley was the only member to vote no.

Significant upgrades planned include building two additional treatment basins at the plant to increase capacity by 40 million gallons per day.

For the average residential customer, by the year 2018 they'll pay an additional $124 per year for water service, with the additional money to pay for upgrades to the water plant and water delivery system.

The vote came on the same day the city's performance audit advisory committee met for the first time. The panel will be setting the scope for an upcoming audit of the city public utility operations to look for potential efficiencies and savings.

Councilwoman Lindsay Webb says even though the higher rates have been approved, she's going to make sure the utility audit will happen and the city improves its customer service.
