Toledo racing operations could move to Dayton next season

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

This could be the last season at Raceway Park in west Toledo. Operations could move to a new racetrack under construction in Dayton.

In a meeting Wednesday morning, the Ohio Racing Commission approved transfer of Penn National Gaming's permit for Toledo's Raceway Park to a new racetrack under construction in Dayton, which is also owned by Penn Gaming.

ORC Chairman, Robert Schmitz, says he expects all Toledo racing to be moved to Dayton for the beginning of the 2014 racing season next spring. According to Schmitz, the permit has no required date for Penn Gaming to begin operations in Dayton.

Bob Tennenbaum, a spokesman for Penn Gaming, says it is possible the beginning of the 2014 racing season could start in Toledo and be transferred to Dayton later in the spring of 2014. Still, he says Penn Gaming is prepared to begin the 2014 season next April in Toledo if necessary.

Construction at the new Dayton track stopped because of a dispute with the state over the number of seats. However, Tennenbaum says that issue has been resolved and after about a month off, construction has resumed. He says it is possible for the contractor to catch up weather permitting.

Schmitz says the ORC does not know when the Dayton track will be completed. A call to Penn Gaming to get a completion date for the track has not been returned.
