Boaters excited for warm weather

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the weather finally warms up, people are getting ready to take to the water as soon as they can.

Many boaters are out prepping their boats, saying they are ready to get the season started.

"If you live in Toledo and haven't been able to spend any time on Lake Erie, you're really missing something," said Ron Soka, treasurer of the Toledo Yacht Club.

Soka has been a member of the Toledo Yacht Club since the ‘80s, and it's days like what we've had lately that he says he gets most excited about: blue skies, sunshine, and warm temperatures. Within the next few weeks, he says, boats will be hitting the water.

"We have about 100 docks here, and they will all be filled up within the next three weeks," Soka said.

The Toledo Yacht Club and their neighbors, the Bay View Yacht Club, share the lagoon with the Coast Guard, who always needs access to the water. So reports of water levels being down more this year don't affect the club, like other marinas in the area.

"We have the advantage of having relatively deep, and certainly the deepest water, kinda on this end of the lake for a marina environment," Soka said.

As boaters rear up to hit the lake, the yacht club is preparing for several upcoming events: First, their spring kick-off party May 18, and their annual Mills Race, the first weekend in June.
