Two toddlers are recovering from being shot Wednesday night, while Toledo police are searching for the person who pulled the trigger.
It happened at the Cherrywood Apartments on Walnut Street in north Toledo shortly before 8 p.m. Witnesses said they were hanging out having a barbeque in the parking lot of the apartment complex when bullets started flying. People were scrambling to get the toddlers inside, and that's when the two were hit.
"When I heard the gunshot, I jumped out of my chair and ran to my baby. I grabbed my baby and the little girl. But when I heard the gunshot, I was already too late, because she had got shot," said mother Deborah Green.
Police said the toddlers were grazed by bullets and taken to the hospital.
Released from the hospital Thursday afternoon, 1-year-old Yealaysia Williams is still recovering from a gunshot wound to the back that left a bullet lodged near her ribs. Police say 2-year-old Kaiejah Williams was only grazed by a bullet in the arm.
"I'm blessed. That's my blessing right there. She's a miracle baby. I just pray that everything is going to keep going fine," said Green.
Witnesses said they saw a man dressed in a dark-colored hoodie and red pants run away from the scene.
"I really don't got nothing to say to him. But he just needs to be on death row. For real. That's the nicest way I can put it," said Green.
Police need your help getting that shooter off the street. If you have any information that can help, call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
Still, Green fears the no-snitching mentality may keep mouths closed.
"They ain't gonna talk. But if they can, please do. Let's find this person, 'fore he shoot another child or something," said Green.
