Canvassers optimistic about Perrysburg transportation levy

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Perrysburg hasn't had any bus service since bailing out of TARTA two years ago.

Tuesday, there will be a second ballot initiative to appropriate funding for a new transportation system.

Canvassers spent Saturday knocking on doors, passing out literature and drumming up support for the levy.

It's a five year .85 mill levy.

Cost for a $200,000 homeowner will be $4.00 a month for the dial-a-ride service.

The service will also provide a connecting point with TARTA in Maumee and Perrysburg.

"Folks can call and create a regular schedule or call the day before and arrange a ride within a half hour window," said Rachel Johnson of the "Go Perrysburg" campaign committee.

Residents like Gil Lutz have been inconvenienced by the cut in bus service.

He's blind and has occasionally been left homebound with his seeing-eye dog Satchel.

When we come to something like this canvass I can lean on somebody that can come and take me here or try to get a friend but that wears thin very quickly," said Mr. Lutz.

Last year, a similar proposal was narrowly defeated by 108 votes.

But the "Go Perrysburg" committee is optimistic about passage.

"We had a real good ground game this time. Had volunteers going out regularly canvassing, knocking on doors, making calls, a lot of direct mail. Pushed hard to make sure people are making an informed choice," said Ms. Johnson.
