City looks to revitalize neighborhood near Overland Industrial Park

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority is redeveloping the former Jeep Parkway site, now called the Overland Industrial Park, the city of Toledo wants to do what it can to revitalize the neighborhood nearby to make sure its future looks brighter, as well.

The city is receiving technical assistance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, along with the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities grant program, and is teaming up with partners, including the Toledo Community Foundation.

Currently, the city is conducting an assessment of the neighborhood roughly bounded by Central Avenue, Cherry Street and Berdan Avenue, to see what the challenges are and explore the possibilities for future development for neighbors, to make sure it's benefiting from progress at the Overland Industrial Park.

"As that site becomes redeveloped, where do the employees that are working there - where do they come from? Are they hired out of this neighborhood? If they're working there, where do they eat lunch? Where do they go get coffee? There's an opportunity for this neighborhood," said Tim Murphy with the Toledo Environmental Services.

The city is hosting a community meeting to hear from neighbors on May 7 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kent Branch Library.
